âAvec whom, may I ask? There are not enough men on this side willing to follow anyone to mount even a modest I & R!â
âYeah, and the two of us would play hell finding our way back to the sea with a purloined fishing boat, too. I doubt anything else figures to happen tonight, so letâs sleep on it.â
âSacre God damn, it is not yet midnight and have you forgotten four a.m. is the usual time for a sneak attack, Dick?â
âI havenât. But Don Federicoâs had plenty of four A.M.âs to work with, long before we got here. I donât think he has the balls to hit this settlement on foot. I know Iâd think twice if I valued my own gun slicks. This settlementâs disorganized as hell, itâs true. But that could make reducing it in one fell swoop sort of complicated. These colonists are tough as individual fighters, and you wouldnât want to bump into one in the dark by accident. I think heâs still hoping a war of nerves will do it.â
âMerde alors, you call bombarding the town this afternoon a war of nerves?â
âSure. It made you nervous, didnât it? If the other side had sent a skirmish line in right after that bombardment, the matter could have been settled one way or the other by now. They didnât. Ergo, our sinister Hidalgoâs not ready for a final showdown yet. Why donât you turn in?â
Gaston lit a smoke and insisted, âI am too wound up to lie down alone right now. I wonder if those Indians girls are restless as well.â
Captain Gringo laughed and said, âI know one is. I suggest you try the fat one, though.â
Gaston grinned and said, âI might have known, you sneaky child. Mais why am I discussing my sex life with you instead of the love of my life, hein?â
He clumped out and down the back steps as Captain Gringo lay back, determined now to really call it a night. But heâd just begun to doze off when he became aware he had another visitor. It didnât clump at all like Gaston and, when she proceeded to slide into bed with him, stark naked, he knew for sure it couldn't be Gaston!
He chuckled sleeply and said, âI was hoping youâd come back for more, honey.â
Then, as he gathered her closer and got a better feel of what he was gathering, Jean sighed weakly and confessed, âAy, I was lost the moment ye touched my secret place. Iâve been fighting ever since to resist my passion, but the Gude Bookie says self-abuse is an even wickeder crime against nature, ye ken!â
âWe wouldnât want you to go against the Good Book,â he responded, rolling atop her with no further ado.
She gasped, âOch, is that any way to treat a lady?â but began to respond indeed once he had it all the way in and, damned if it didnât feel nicer, or at least a nice change, from the smaller, plumper Carib lassie heâd just
